The Project STAR Honorarium Program

Teachers are always on the lookout for ways to effectively teach astronomy, earth science, and physics. Many have found workshops to be an ideal forum for teaching their colleagues about the advantages of hands-on learning and the usefulness of the Project STAR (Science Teaching through its Astronomical Roots) materials.

Learning Technologies has devised the Project STAR Honorarium program to reward and honor the teachers who, through teacher workshops, help promote the philosophy that students will learn better when they can test their theories with hands-on, model-building exercises.

To facilitate this end and to show our appreciation to those educators who help us to spread the word about Project STAR, LTI would like to help in two ways. First, we want to make teaching a workshop an easy and less costly way for teachers to share their ideas. Therefore, we will provide many of the Project STAR materials for the workshop free of charge for the attendees to make and take. Second, we want to make it easier for presenters to acquire these materials for use with their own students. So, if the guidelines are successfully completed, we will send the presenter a “thank you” coupon redeemable for free Project STAR materials.

How to Apply

1. Download an Application Form. Please be prepared to provide:

  • Date of the workshop(s)
  • Name of workshop and conference (if applicable)
  • Length of workshop
  • Where the workshop is being held (including institution, city, state)
  • The number of educators expect to attend, their teaching level (middle school, high school, etc.), and where they are from (district, state, all over the country)
  • Requested materials, in order of preference
  • A brief description of the workshop, and how you plan to incorporate the Project STAR materials

2. Once we have received and reviewed your completed application, we will contact you to discuss how we are able to help (via e-mail preferably, or fax, or phone where we can leave a detailed message). Please note, although we do our best to fulfill your requests, we sometimes have to substitute or cut back on requested items that exceed our budgetary constraints. (Material requests are considered on an individual basis as there are many factors taken into account.)

3. After the workshop you are expected to:

  • Send us the names and complete addresses of the educators who attended your workshop so that we can send them follow-up information. Please, they must be typed in order to qualify for the coupon! Download a Workshop Sign Up Sheet.
  • Send us your completed Workshop Checklist Form with any comments or feedback about the Project STAR materials from your workshop participants. If your actual number of attendees does not meet the original expected number of attendees, please indicate on this form how you would like us to handle the discrepancy. Download a Workshop Checklist Form.
  • Send us a photocopy of the conference program page or flyer that lists the description of your workshop (if there is one).

4. If the above guidelines are met, LTI will send you a coupon for Project STAR materials for use in your own classroom or school.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Teachers must already be familiar with, and users of the Project STAR materials in order to be eligible.
  • Workshops must be attended by 10 or more educators (not students) to be eligible for the coupon. These educators must be from at least 3 or more schools.
  • To guarantee the timely arrival of your materials, you must place your order at least 30 days prior to the date of your workshop. If orders are placed with less than 30 days notice, you may be responsible for paying the necessary shipping charges (such as UPS Second Day Air) to ensure their timely arrival.
  • Only Project STAR materials are applicable (items beginning with ‘PS’ in the catalog). We are unable to provide activity books, other curricula, software or ‘LT’ items for workshops (GEMS titles, SETI titles, the Heifetz Planisphere, etc., are not applicable).
  • We reserve the right to refuse requests for materials (partial or in entirety) that we deem unreasonable or inappropriate. We reserve the right to deny coupons when the above guidelines are not met. Coupons are honored for two years after their issuance date.
