The Classic STARLAB Dome

Please Note:  The new design of the standard dome has a black exterior and silvered interior.
The giant dome will retain both silver interior and exterior while supplies last!

The Classic STARLAB Dome, developed in 1977, is available in two sizes, Standard and Giant. It is made from a nylon-reinforced, flame-resistant, Latex™-free, industrial-grade fabric. The outer surface of this silvery durable fabric insures opacity even in fully lighted rooms. The inside surface has an aluminized reflective coating designed to clearly display bright images. Its unique design, kid-friendly entrance tunnel and portability make it ideal for interactive, hands-on, minds-on learning.

A powerful fan inflates and circulates air throughout the dome through a carefully designed ventilation system which maintains a comfortable temperature and prevents excessive air loss during entry and exit.

While the Standard Dome can be set up almost anywhere and can accommodate up to 27 people, the Giant Dome has the capacity to seat up to 56 people. The Giant Dome is best set up in an open space such as an auditorium, a gymnasium or a large classroom. It is an ideal tool for large school groups, for museum programs including community outreach and fundraisers, for star parties, and for individuals running their own educational business who desire the capability of accommodating larger groups. Both domes are wheelchair-accessible and allow for rapid evacuation.

STARLAB is an incredibly precise, interactive and exciting planetarium. The innovative design of this highly durable and portable dome, creates an ideal environment for hands-on, minds-on activities. It is so versatile, it can used as a portable darkroom, a visual center for movies, slides, and overhead projections. Its unique design structure even provides excellent acoustics for sound experiments and music.

The Digital STARLAB Dome

The Digital Dome comes in 5 and 7 meter sizes and is designed for use with Digital or Analog STARLAB projectors. The interior consists of a plush gray surface which is ideal for Digital projections.  The interior surface absorbs bright projections, preventing image glare or "wash-out".

One aspect of the 5 Meter size is that it is light enough to be checked as luggage on standard flights in the US. Larger domes are taller and are best used in gyms or cafeterias.  Other dome sizes and configurations are available by request.

The cloth used in each Digital Dome is custom made for this specific application. And as such, the cloth is designed with the highest standards possible for fire retardancy. Each batch of cloth manufactured for Science First / STARLAB has to pass stringent laboratory testing for fire retardancy before it is accepted for manufacturing of the dome.
